Directions for setting up your wiki site.

1. Start at http://pbwiki.com

2. Sign up with a wiki name and your e-mail address. Your wiki name will become part of your wiki address, so choose something that will be easy for your students (and you) to remember.

3. Update your HOME page by clicking the EDIT PAGE button at the top. Your home page is the front page that appears when you go to your wiki address. It is a good place to introduce what your wiki is going to be about.

4. When you are ready to add a new page, click on CREATE A NEW PAGE. You need to create a name for your page and then choose a template. There are various templates that you can use when setting up a new page. The templates include classroom, group project and course syllabus. You can also choose no template. Once you click CREATE A NEW PAGE, it will take you directly to the EDITING page function. There you can create the page similarly to creating a Word document.

5. After creating a new page, you will want to set up a link to that page from your HOME PAGE. Setting up links with your wiki is VERY EASY. In the editing mode, there is a link on the top tool bar for LINK. You click in the document where you want to add the link (sometimes you have to click twice) and then you click the Link button.

It will ask if you want to link to a wikipage or a url. A url is any web page on the internet. A wikipage is a page that you have created in your wiki. When you choose wikipage you can then choose one of the pages from the second drop down menu. Under the drop down menus it will show you the text that will appear on your page. When you have chosen your page, click ok and the link will show up on your page.

6. You can also insert images. Inserting images into a wiki is just like inserting images into a Word documents.  Click on INSERT IMAGE.

A box will pop-up that asks you to Browse for your image on your computer, once you find the image and click on its file name it will appear in the box, then you must click UPLOAD. Once you upload an image it will remain available for you to add to other places in your wiki. You will see all images available when you click on INSERT IMAGE.

7. Don't forget to SAVE after working in any of your wiki pages.

8. Wikis are very user friendly. You can play in the pages with font size, font style, color, background color, links and images.

A wiki is a great opportunity to share work with others. Please realize that other people (if you make your wiki public) can read the comments, questions and observations that you put up on the wiki.
